What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in life?

This was the same question directed to Catriona Gray in the recent Miss Universe Pageant. And she gave the perfect answer – being grateful.

Giving thanks in all circumstances was mentioned by the apostle Paul in Thessalonians as God’s will for us.

“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:18)

This is not an easy command to follow but the secret lies in the words ‘in Christ Jesus’. Only He can change minds, attitudes and actions.

As passionate women running businesses, slow down during this festive season and look back at the past year. Did you have good clients? Were you able to execute creative ideas? Were there cases wherein you were underpaid or even worse, unpaid? How did you handle complaints about your work? Were there lost opportunities? By calling to mind all that happened, does your heart overflow with gratefulness? If not, this article will explain how having a thankful spirit can transform your businesses and make 2019 your best year ever.

Branding
A thankful heart is free to explore one’s unique blend of skills and experiences and selflessly serve clients. Coming from an attitude of gratefulness, there is no fear of scarcity. The marketplace may be very competitive but this will set you apart.

Improving relationships
With gratefulness comes humility. You will always seek mentors and network with vendors who are aligned to your business. Learn as much as you can and find ways to show appreciation for their help. If you encounter newbies in the industry, humbly share your experiences and point them in the right direction.

Inspiring to move forward
There will always be setbacks in business, usually due to changes brought about by world events. However, the worst kind of setback is when you doubt yourself and stop growing. Therefore, it is advisable to keep a journal of victories. Be as detailed as you can. Write down how each struggle was won. Those experiences will be your source of strength, keeping your heart
thankful and strong to take the courageous next step forward.

Keeping yourself positive amidst adversity
Catriona Gray mentioned about ‘seeing situations with a silver lining’. One of Steve Jobs’ famous quote was about ‘connecting the dots looking backwards’. In the same way, having a thankful heart is knowing that each obstacle will turn out to be a blessing later. Every unfortunate event has its reasons for happening, either to warn or protect you. So, don’t get disappointed easily. Instead, mark this in your journal and wait patiently for revelation. It will always turn out for the best.

Starting over
Before the New Year countdown starts, it is good practice to review your business plan. Remove things that did not work and boldly pursue new creative ideas. But don’t forget – intentionally decide to start every day with a grateful heart. You won’t regret it.

Have a grateful heart and follow these tips and you’ll sure have the best year to come. Happy New Year!
